Mountain High - River Low

A Unique International Adventure Offer

From rocks of the golden-sand shoreline of New Zealand's Abel Tasman National Park to the snow-covered Canadian Rockies, never before has an adventure tourism programme offered so much contrast to students.

Nelson Marlborough Institute of Technology (NMIT), located at the top of New Zealand's South Island, has partnered with the College of the Rockies in Golden, British Columbia, Canada to provide an unusual adventure tourism programme. Called the 'Double Challenge', the programme consists of eight weeks of learning snow and ice skills in the Canadian Rockies with expert guides followed by eight weeks of sea kayaking and river rafting in New Zealand, taught by world class instructors through NMIT. Head of NMIT's School of Tourism and Hospitality, Elizabeth Latham says the Double Challenge is about providing students with an intensive programme where the focus is action.

"We've designed the programme between NMIT and the College of the Rockies to be stimulating and challenging. It's ideal for people from Europe, for example, who would like to experience adventure tourism learning in the context of North America and New Zealand. The learning in the Double Challenge is the equivalent of four courses within NMIT's Diploma in Adventure Tourism."

The programme is unique because it's taking place in two of the world's adventure tourism hotspots. The Nelson/Tasman region has the highest sunshine hours of anywhere in New Zealand and is considered an international playground. The Abel Tasman National Park boasts clear, turquoise waters and secluded golden beaches rimmed with native bush. Two hours away in one direction is the 1500km coastline of the spectacular Marlborough Sounds, and south is the deep, clear Buller River; a must-do for rafters.

In Canada, the base for the mountain adventure section of the programme is the resort town of Golden, BC. It's located at the heart of one of the region's newest ski resorts - Kicking Horse Mountain. It's a rugged mountaineering paradise and the gondola and range of ski lifts give access to a range of unbelievable powder skiing and boarding. It's also renowned for its wildlife, mountain-biking and hiking trails. Karen Cathcart, Campus Manager, College of the Rockies at Golden, says Golden is known world wide for its extreme adventure activities and the college for its adventure training.

"The Double Challenge partnership with NMIT is unique and it means we can provide the best of both worlds."
